How to Clean Gutters Safely from a Ladder with shopping list included

Cleaning gutters is an essential home maintenance task in here in Newberg, Oregon because our beautiful trees and constant rain can cause damage to your property.

However, it can be a daunting task, especially when working from a ladder.

This entry will guide you through the process of safely cleaning your gutters using a ladder with roof stabilizers, ensuring your safety while effectively clearing out debris.

Equipment You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather the necessary equipment:

Ladder- A sturdy extension ladder long enough to get above your roof and still provide a safe angle to climb the ladder

Roof Stabilizers –These attach to your ladder and help distribute weight, providing added stability while you work.

Cleaning the gutters

Choose the Right Spot: Start by walking about 10 feet from the edge of your house. The right distance reduces moving the ladder around more as it allows you to reach a 10-foot section of gutter on both sides with the telescopic pole.

Attach Roof Stabilizers: Secure the roof stabilizers to your ladder. This equipment provides a wider base of support and prevents the ladder from slipping or tipping while you’re working.

Position the Ladder: Set up your ladder on stable, even ground. If the ground is uneven, use ladder levelers or adjust the feet of the ladder for stability. Ensure that the ladder is at a 75-degree angle; you can check this by placing your toes against the feet of the ladder; your knees should be slightly bent when you reach out to grab the rungs.

Test Stability: Before climbing, shake the ladder gently to ensure it’s stable. If it shifts, adjust the position until it feels secure. We recommend strongly having someone stand on the bottom of the ladder when climbing or descending down the ladder. This ensures that wind gusts or other unforeseen events don’t cause the ladder to fall.

Cleaning the Gutters

Using the Telescopic Pole: While standing on the ladder, extend your telescopic pole to reach the farthest sections of the gutter. Use the gutter scraper to pull debris toward you. This method minimizes the need to walk on the roof or reposition the ladder multiple times, reducing your risk of falls. Getting the debris through the gutter spikes can be tricky if the gutters have a lot of debris in them. We suggest pulling smaller amounts through at a time.

Work in Sections: Clean a 10-foot section of gutter at a time. After clearing the debris, lower the pole and collect the debris in your bucket or toss it onto the tarp below. This keeps the area tidy and makes cleanup easier.

Clear Downspouts: Once the gutters are cleared, check your downspouts. If you notice any clogs, you can use a garden hose to jet water down the spout, helping to flush out any remaining debris. This is particularly effective for ensuring that your gutters function properly, especially after heavy rain. A lot of times the clog is on top of the downspout and can be easily removed but if there’s a clog deeper in the downspout we suggest taking apart the downspout from the ground and using a 1/2 in pvc pipe to jab the debris inside until it comes loose.

If that doesn’t work, give us a call. We can vacuum them out with our Provac gutter cleaner or snake jet them out!

Final Touches

After you’ve cleaned your gutters, take a moment to inspect the entire system. Look for any signs of damage or wear, such as sagging gutters or loose downspouts, and address these issues promptly. Finally, remember that maintaining your gutters regularly can prevent future build-up, making your next cleaning session easier.

Cleaning gutters may seem like a daunting task, but with the right equipment, a safe setup, and a methodical approach, you can do it effectively and safely. By using a ladder with roof stabilizers and a telescopic pole, you can minimize risks and ensure your gutters remain clear and functional.

Please, always be safe on a ladder, they are very dangerous and you can hurt yourself. This advice is meant for those who wish to clean their own gutters however we are not responsible for any property damage or injury resulting from gutter cleaning.

Please be safe and if you don’t feel good about it, don’t do it.
